Once again the Brits have worked out the way to minimize cost of wine storage. Merchants buy the wine on release and keep it for the customer in a bonded (climate controlled) warehouse, and the customer does not pay Value Added Tax (VAT) or Duty. When the wine is shipped to the customer the VAT and Duty must be paid. However, in the US, although the concept exists it is rarely used. Most merchants import the wine, pay all taxes, and sell it. |
