Once a wine is not in the retail channels any more (two to three years after release), it is a higher risk as an investment bet. What is more to buy the wine, a Winevestor, will be paying auction commissions. There are some situations when it is worth taking the plunge. Occasionally a good vintage is followed by a great vintage, which attracts the public’s wine buying dollars and raises the new release prices. This might leave the good vintage in value sector territory, where it is undervalued compared to the new wines. A good example of this was (and still is) the 1995/1996 Bordeaux when the 2000 pushed prices up.
