Wine is considered an Alternative Investment (AI). These are investments which are outside the mainstream, are a specialist vehicle, and are typically used as a way of reducing risk, whilst keeping the rate of return high. AI falls into three categories – financial, non-financial and collectibles. Financial AI includes private equity, hedge funds and a growing number of derivatives. Non-financial AI includes real estate. Collectible AI includes Art, Coins, Stamps and Wine. The name of the category, Collectible, is self explanatory – it includes art, antiques, coins and wine. The Collectible with the highest rate of return and the lowest correlation with the stock market is wine. For example in 2002, Bordeaux wines rose 8.5% whilst the Dow went down 17%. |
