Burghound

It was inevitable. As the description and rating of wine to the wine buying population became more mature, groups and individuals would specialize on specific areas. Allen Meadows and Burghound is the first of these to reach critical mass. He focuses, as his branding name implies, on the wine of Burgundy. For Winevestors this is a highly problematic area, where there are only a couple of wines that are consistent IGW and there is a lot of expensive wine sold which is sub-standard. If anywhere cries out for an objective guide through the fading and up and coming wine makers it is Burgundy.

Robert Parker is persona-non-grata in Burgundy. This is mainly due to Parker’s penchant for fruit bombs; the antithesis of Burgundy. After a few years of reviews which the Burgundian wine producers perceived as insulting, Parker now finds it difficult to taste in Burgundy. As a result of this, Parker brought his first collaborator onto the Wine Advocate – Pierre-Antoine Rovani who writes on Burgundy and a number of other areas.

This provided an opportunity for someone else to be ‘the’ Winefluencer on Burgundy and Allen Meadows leapt into the breach. He has been visiting Burgundy for twenty years and in 1999 turned his passion into a business by producing the first Burghound newsletter. The newsletter is on a quarterly basis, uses the ubiquitous 100 point scoring system and can all be accessed from his website (www.burghound.com). In a short period he has over 2,000 subscribers.

Burghound has quickly become the prominent scoring system on Burgundy, and in many auction catalogues or retail wine descriptions, the BH score can be found. Burghound follows the same 100 point scoring system, which allows the scores to be easily assimilated by the consumer.

Watch for Allen Meadows and Burghound to become more influential on the price of Burgundy wines. Just as Robert Parker firmed up IGW for Bordeaux it is possible that Burghound will do the same for Burgundy and WineInvestor.com will track more Burgundies that consistently provide high rates of return.
