 Zachys

Zachys is based in Scarsdale, NY, where its focus on Bordeaux, and large format bottles has encouraged serious wine lovers to make the pilgrimage to the suburbs for years. The company is led by Don Zacharia and is in the slow process of being passed to the next generation of son, Jeff Zacharia, and son-in-law Andrew McMurray. The store has always focused on the collector, and Bordeaux futures can account for as much as 20% of their business. In recent years they have moved effectively onto the internet (with a sophisticated retail site) and into the wine auction business. When wine auctions became legal in NY in 1994, Zachys teamed up with Christies to provide the service. The difference in approach of the family business and the behemoth auction house led to a splitting of ways. Zachys held the first solo wine auction in 2002 and is now considered one of the biggest, best and most innovative wine auction houses. They have made their auctions events, holding them in the high-end New York restaurant Daniel and spotlighting the talents of top auctioneers Ursula Hermacinski and Fritz Hatton. They have formed a wine auction partnership with the wine retailer Wally’s in California and have started to hold joint auctions in Los Angeles.
