Winebid has become the 800lb gorilla of the online wine auctions. It has a great website, and has a weekly auction ending at 9PM EST on Sundays. It tends to sell hard-to-get wines in low quantities. The wines on sale can typically be seen by photograph, and so a prospective buyer at least see what they are buying. Provenance is more questionnable than the conventional auction houses, but Winebid do all they can to ensure that the wines they are selling are in good condition. Winebid gives their sellers guidance on what the wines should sell for, as the prices on the site are very consistent and reasonable. Winebid take wines from their sellers on consignment and the wines are shipped from Winebid’s facilities. As such they are able to control the process and there is never a problem with the seller. Winebid is one of the new breed of service which allows a Winevestor with limited means to buy and sell tough-to-find wines in low quantities.
