Wallace creates an exciting read of entwined stories, which include:

• The early days of wine auctions, and the emergence of ancient wine collecting as a hobby and passion for a number of very rich or very obsessed people.
• The Jefferson bottles, which are a trove of bottles found by Harvey Rodenstock in walled-off room in Paris.

• Harvey Rodenstock, a larger than life character, who was one of the highest profile collectors in Europe
• The desperate desire by many wine insiders to believe Rodenstock and to taste, sell and report on the wines that he produced.
